Frequently Asked Questions or FAQs. In this section, you can find
the basic answer to most common questions. Warranty We are the FIRST manufacturer in the world to provide this warranty for all our products, including the Energy Saving Compact Fluorescent Lamp.
Why
is our price so low? 1. The birth place of Luxeon is in Malaysia. They are manufactured here in the Penang Island. 2. We are not here to make huge profit from our customer. As most of our customers are hobbyists, designers, engineers, we try keeping the price low to support the people. We just want to cover the cost for the service provided. 3. We are proud to be known as A Lighting Company with a heart. We do not focus only on Accounting Profits, but Social Profits as well. Click here for details.

What
is the different between the Luxeon Star, Luxeon V Star and Luxeon Emitter? Luxeon Star is basically Luxeon Emitter on a hexagonal MCPCB (or Star configuration). Their nominal voltage is 3.65V and 350mA. By default, it's known as Luxeon 1 Watt version. Luxeon V Star is basically 4 units of Luxeon Emitter in die form on a single chip on a hexagonal MCPCB. They are connected in series and parallel thus having the Voltage of 6.5V and 700mA. By default, they are know as the 5 Watt version (notice the roman V sign denotes 5 Watt). Luxeon V Star is four times brighter than Luxeon Star. MCPCB or Metal Core Printed Circuit Board is basically a PCB that is made out of metal properties. Aluminium is the most commonly used in the industry. In the case for Luxeon Star, it's made out of Aluminium. The purpose for MCPCB is like a Heatsink on a CPU (Central Processing Unit), to dissipate heat.
What
do I need to drive a Luxeon? (No, it's not driving a Lexus!) One unit of Luxeon Star (1 Watt version) requires 350mA (0.35A) for maximum brightness, and if you pulsed the output, you can drive supply it with 400mA (0.4A) There are two basic ways to drive a Luxeon. 1. Continious current 2. Pulsed Current Pulsed current output is considered a better design compare to Continuous Current Output. The definition for Pulsed Current Output is connecting the Luxeon with a current source at fixed (or variable) frequency (switching it ON and OFF). Layman terms: Imagine a LED. When connect it to a power source and switch ON the power button, it will light up. When you switch OFF, it will dim out. Try doing this ON and OFF at a faster rate. Let's say 10 times a second. You'll notice your LED is flashing (10 times per second or 10Hz). If you increase it further, let's say at 50 times per second (50Hz) you can hardly notice the LED is blinking. The reason is our eyes are slow in reacting changing of images above 25 times per second. This concept is used in movie projections and television, where the pictures are projected at 50 times per second. Referring back to LEDs, by increasing the frequency, we can actually supply the current higher than normal. This current is labelled as Ip in the datasheet.

Why
does the Luxeon get hot when it's operational?
What's
the size of the Heatsink required for Luxeon 1 Watt? A general rule of thumb, 1 Watt of Luxeon require about 1 square inch of Aluminium. This is the absolute minimum, as with any Heatsink, the bigger the better. Solid state device last longer f they are cooler. Their lifetime is inversely proportionate with the Heat. The hotter it gets, the shorter the lifetime.
Who's
the manufacturer of Luxeon?
How
bright is Luxeon compare to normal LED? On average, but it depends on the colour. 1 unit of Luxeon 1W = 20 to 50 units of LEDs 1 unit of Luxeon V or 5W = 80 to 200 units of LEDs
How
long does Luxeon last? As with most solid state device (solid state by definition is a device which does not have any moving parts and is made from silicon) Luxeon share the same characteristic with ICs (Integrated Chips). They are long lasting and normally will not fail under normal conditions. Remember your cassette player; most of them would have broken down in a couple of years. Even after your cassette player has broken down, the radio is still working. Radio is known as a solid state device, as they are not working/moving parts for it to break down. This is true for MP3's player. These are solid state devices that will last a long time too compare to their cousin, the CD's player or Walkman. Please bear in mind, that MP3 will not last as long as radios because they use flash memory to hold their data. There are a maximum number of times before the flash memory will fail. Why is Luxeon more energy saving
compare to incandescent Bulb or Fluorescent Lamp? Let me explain how you define energy efficient. For example, 100 Watt of energy. You put it into a normal Incandescent Bulb or Filament Bulb. Out of that 100 Watt of energy you put into the bulb, 80% (or 80 Watt) is used to heat up the tungsten filament and 20% (or 20 Watt) is used to produce the light. This means only 20% is used to produce light and 80% wasted as heat. Efficiency is 20% As for solid state light, LEDs or Luxeon, they are very efficient. For the same scenario of 100 Watt, 90% (or 90 Watt) is converted into light and only 10% is wasted. This means that Luxeon has 90% efficiency. I would like to point out also, that if the incandescent bulb is used in air-conditioned location, the heat produced by these bulb will increase the air temperature, thus increasing the demand of air-condition, i.e. more money on electricity bills.
